How ZEST Treats Dry Eyes at the Root Cause (and What Lake Mary Patients Should Expect)

Dry, irritated eyes are not always caused by a lack of tears. For many patients, inflammation, bacteria, debris, and Demodex mites along the eyelids can contribute to ongoing symptoms. At Primera Eye Care in Lake Mary, we offer ZEST™ as an in-office treatment designed to thoroughly clean the eyelids and lashes and address these common contributors to dry eye discomfort.

How Eyelid Health Can Affect Dry Eyes

Your eyelids play an important role in maintaining a healthy tear film. Throughout the day, oil, makeup, bacteria, dead skin, environmental debris, and other irritants can accumulate around the lash line.

When this buildup is not adequately removed, the eyelid margins may become irritated or inflamed. Conditions such as blepharitis and Demodex infestations can also contribute to redness, itching, burning, and chronic dry eye symptoms. This is why treating the eyelids themselves may be an important part of managing dry eye for some Lake Mary patients.

What Is ZEST™ Dry Eye Treatment?

ZEST™, or Zocular Eyelid System Technology, is a non-invasive treatment that works like a professional deep cleaning for your eyelids. Instead of only temporarily lubricating the eye with artificial tears, ZEST™ focuses on removing debris and irritants from the eyelid margins and lashes.

During treatment, we apply a specialized okra-based gel to the eyelids. The gel is gently massaged along the eyelid margins and lashes before being rinsed away with saline. The process helps remove accumulated oils, dirt, bacteria, and other material that may be contributing to irritation.

What Can ZEST™ Help With?

We may recommend ZEST™ for Lake Mary patients experiencing symptoms or conditions associated with poor eyelid hygiene, including:

•          Dry, burning, or irritated eyes

•          Red or inflamed eyelid margins

•          Blepharitis

•          Demodex-related eyelid irritation

•          Itchy or uncomfortable eyes

•          Buildup or debris around the eyelashes

Because dry eye can have several possible causes, we first evaluate your eyes and eyelids to determine whether ZEST™ is appropriate for your specific symptoms.

What Should You Expect During ZEST™ Treatment?

ZEST™ is performed in our Lake Mary eye care office and does not require surgery or downtime. The treatment is gentle and designed to thoroughly cleanse areas around the lashes that can be difficult to address with routine eyelid hygiene at home.

Many patients may notice reduced irritation, redness, or swelling soon after treatment, although results can vary. Continued eyelid care or additional treatments may be recommended depending on the cause and severity of your dry eye symptoms.

Treating More Than Just Dry Eye Symptoms

Artificial tears can be helpful for temporary relief, but recurring symptoms may require a closer look at what is happening along the eyelid margins and tear film. By removing debris and irritants that can contribute to inflammation, ZEST™ gives us another way to address an important source of dry eye discomfort rather than simply masking symptoms.

If burning, itching, redness, or persistent dry eyes are interfering with your day, schedule a dry eye evaluation with Primera Eye Care to find out whether ZEST™ may be right for you. Visit our office in Lake Mary, FL, or call (321) 343-5300 to book an appointment today.
